A very brief history of 101 – the new police non emergency line

2006 – branded a failure by Hampshire Constabulary because the number of calls to 999 increased
2007 – scrapped as a flop by Labour because the pilot scheme didn’t reduce costs. Instead, it racked up bills of £41 million with two-thirds of calls to 101 deemed inappropriate
2010 -revived by Labour as part of Gordon Brown’s pre-election commitments
2012 – rolled out nationally today by the Coalition
