A last word for ‘absent mothers’ on Mother’s Day

Here are some phrases you don’t often hear about mothers. I certainly never heard my mother called any of these things even though she was all of them at various times.

  • A family woman
  • Absent mothers
  • Feckless mothers
  • An active mother
  • A mother being ‘in her son’s/daughter’s life’

And some you don’t hear about fathers:

  • Slummy daddy
  • A barren man
  • Working father
  • Busy dads
  • Paternal instincts
  • Dadpreneur
  • Pushy dads
  • Yummy daddies
  • Competitive dads
  • Earth father
  • Dadsy
  • DILF (dad I’d like to F)

I’m not saying it’s a competition. But I do think assumptions about the roles of mothers and fathers are interesting. Can you think of any more?

N.B.  This is a recycled post from ages ago called ‘Dadpreneur’. I thought I would re-launch it for Mother’s Day!

  1. Charles Beauregard says:

    Soccer dads?

  2. Yes, nice one. Especially relevant in the US.
